Three decomposed bodies found in Lithuania near Belarus border

BNS 2025.04.30 17:40

Lithuanian border guards on Wednesday afternoon found what are believed to be the remains of three people in a river in the southern district of Varėna, near the border with Belarus.

"During a routine patrol, guards from the Kabeliai frontier station spotted what appear to be three human bodies in the Katra River, but they have not yet been recovered, so it's hard to say with complete certainty whether they are in fact human remains," Giedrius Mišutis, spokesman for the State Border Guard Service (VSAT), told BNS.

"Visually, they appear to be human bodies that have been heavily affected by time," he added.

According to Misutis, the remains were found in the Čepkeliai swamp area, in the river, which is about ten metres wide. The current there is weak, and the depth, including silt, may reach up to two meters.
