Lithuania’s Kyiv embassy cancels event but continues work amid air raid alerts

BNS 2024.11.21 09:20

As several diplomatic missions in Kyiv closed on Wednesday amid warnings of a large-scale air attack, Lithuania’s embassy cancelled a planned event but remained open.

“We didn’t have any visitors scheduled from outside; most of our commitments were external,” Lithuanian Ambassador to Ukraine Inga Stanytė-Tolockienė told BNS on Wednesday. “We had planned one public event, so we cancelled it.”

The US and some other embassies in Kyiv announced on Wednesday that they would stay closed for security reasons after the American delegation said it had received a warning of a potentially significant air attack on the Ukrainian capital.

Stanytė-Tolockienė said the decision to keep the embassy open was based on the available information.

“At this moment, we have not received any substantiated information or additional data [about an increased threat],” the ambassador said.

“We’ll continue to coordinate closely with Western allies and Ukrainian institutions. If the situation changes overnight or in the morning, I’ll adjust my decisions accordingly,” she added.

Stanytė-Tolockienė noted that some of the embassies that had announced closures also continued their work, but did not receive visitors.

“Some of those [embassies], in fact, only suspended public access. The embassy staff is working but not accepting visitors,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military intelligence described warnings of large-scale missile strikes on the country as a “psychological operation” carried out by Moscow.

The intelligence agency cautioned against fake messages circulating on social media about alleged increased missile threats.
