Belarus has detained a Lithuanian citizen who was trying to smuggle ammunition into the country, officials from both countries have confirmed.
Two magazines containing 34 9mm pistol cartridges were found in the Lithuanian citizen’s bag at the Kamienny Loh border crossing, the Belarusian state news agency Belta reported, quoting Grodno customs officials.
A criminal case has been opened. The man faces up to seven years of imprisonment.
Paulina Levickytė, spokesperson for the Lithuanian foreign minister, told BNS that the ministry is aware of the situation and that Lithuanian police have been informed about it.
According to her, the Lithuanian man has not yet sought consular assistance.
