Due to forest and peatland fires in Belarus, there may be a smell of burning in some parts of Lithuania, the Environmental Protection Agency said on Saturday.
According to the agency, concentrations of particulate matter are also elevated in many parts of the country.
“We recommend reducing physical activity outdoors by refraining from longer walks, running, cycling, and other physical activities if they intensify breathing,” it said.
According to the National Public Health Centre, particulate matter is a mixture of airborne particles and liquid droplets, which may contain acids, sulphates, nitrates, organic compounds, metals, soil particles, dust, soot, as well as biological components such as allergens and microorganisms.
People with asthma and other respiratory and circulatory diseases, as well as the elderly, infants, children, and pregnant women, are among the population at risk of being affected by increased air pollution and should be more vigilant.
