Lithuania launches new search for ambassador to Poland

Jūratė Skėrytė, BNS 2024.03.15 13:57

Lithuania has started looking for a new candidate for its ambassador to Poland after the presidential office withdrew a previously agreed nomination, Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis has said.

“The big news is that we will be looking for a new candidate to go to Poland,” he told reporters after a meeting of the parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs on Friday.

“We have been informed about this by the President’s Office,” Landsbergis said.

Asta Skaisgiryte, the president’s senior adviser on foreign policy, says the decision was made due to the health problems of the previously agreed candidate.

“The candidacy that had already been agreed unfortunately faced very serious health problems. Therefore, at the last minute, they had to change their mind and decided that they could not leave Lithuania at the moment,” she told journalists.

At the beginning of March, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and Landsbergis said they reached an agreement on the appointment of Lithuania’s ambassador to Poland.

Relations between the President’s Office and the Foreign Ministry have been tense recently, with the president refusing to appoint the ministry’s proposed candidates to ambassadorial positions. In all, 13 envoy positions are currently vacant, including at Lithuania’s embassy in Poland.

The position of Lithuania’s ambassador to Poland has been vacant since early September last year when Eduardas Borisovas was recalled after completing his term of office. The embassy is currently led by Minister Plenipotentiary Audronė Markevičienė.
