Lithuania’s oldest person passes away weeks before turning 110

Juozas Mereckas, a resident of Kaišiadorys District, passed away on Sunday at the age of 109. He was the oldest person in Lithuania, according to the Centre of Registers.

The man would have turned 110 on January 26, said Eugenija Genevičienė, an elder of Rumšiškės in Kaišiadorys District.

“Juozas Mereckas died on Sunday,” the elder said.

Mereckas had four children.

The elderly man was cared for by one of his daughters, and spent summers at his home in Dovainonys, Kaišiadorys District in central Lithuania, and winters in Kaunas with his relatives.

Mereckas was a lively and active man, according to Genevičienė, “used to go to the shop by himself”, but he fell ill on Christmas.

There are 339 people in Lithuania who were over 100 on January 1, most of them women.

Centenarians can be found in almost every municipality.
