New administrative, residential, training, and logistical infrastructure for Lithuanian and allied troops will be built in Rukla, central Lithuania, over the next few years, the Defence Ministry announced on Wednesday.

The design work for these buildings has started as part of the development of joint Lithuanian-German projects for new long-term infrastructure in Rukla.

The project will create military infrastructure for the Iron Wolf Infantry Brigade’s Artillery and Logistics Battalions and the NATO Enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battle Group.

“We are currently carrying out major development of military infrastructure in Lithuania. Our goal is to create a fully-fledged infrastructure for allied forces and Lithuanian troops. This is part of Lithuania’s commitment as a host country,” Defence Minister Arvydas Anušauskas has said.

“Moreover, the development of infrastructure is inseparable from increasing the combat power of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and ensuring the country’s security more efficiently,” he added.

Once completed, the site will be capable of accommodating 3,000 soldiers and will also include sports, training and exercise facilities, a medical centre, a canteen, as well as leisure and spiritual development spaces.

The design work will be carried out by the Turkish company Denzay for around 6 million euros, and Lithuania will share the costs with Germany.

Construction work is planned for 2025-2027 and is estimated to cost around 300 million euros. The project is being implemented through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency NSPA.
