Lithuania on Friday handed Belarus a note of protest over repeated border violations.
The Foreign Ministry said in a press release that it summoned a “representative of the Belarusian embassy to Lithuania” to hand them “a note of strong protest” over Wednesday’s violation of the Lithuanian state border by a Belarusian border guard.
In the note, the ministry demanded that the neighbouring country “provides an explanation for the incident as soon as possible and takes all necessary measures to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future”.
The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (VSAT) has said that the Belarusian official entered Lithuania while five Belarusian border guards were patrolling on their side of the border near Švencionys District.
This is the first time this year that a Belarusian officer has crossed the Lithuanian border, but such cases were recorded in 2021.
A pre-trial investigation has been launched into the incident.
