Flights at Vilnius Airport will be temporarily suspended during the NATO summit in mid July, the Ministry of Transport and Communications said on Friday.
“On July 11-12, during the NATO summit in Lithuania, in line with NATO security requirements, all flights will be banned within a 30-kilometre radius of the Litexpo Exhibition Centre. Flights in Vilnius will be restricted for just over a day, from noon on July 11 to 14:00 on July 12,” the statement said.
According to Lithuanian Airports, more than 100 flights from Vilnius will be cancelled because of the restrictions. Passengers will be informed in advance by the airlines about the planned cancellations.
The Transport Ministry also notes that due to higher than usual aircraft traffic at Vilnius and Kaunas airports, disruptions and delays are possible. It has issued a recommendation to avoid flying to and from Vilnius and Kaunas during this period.
“Please also note that on July 7-13 there will be further restrictions on air traffic over the territory of Lithuania, including a ban on small planes, balloons and drones,” the statement said.
The NATO summit in Vilnius will take place on July 11-12 and is expected to bring together around 40 delegations from NATO member and partner countries, including US President Joe Biden. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been invited to attend.
