A conscript (born in 2002) of the Juozas Vitkus Engineering Battalion was seriously injured on Monday during a military training exercise, the Lithuanian Armed Forces reported.

The soldier with a gunshot wound was urgently transported from the training ground to a hospital, where he died while in intensive care.

On Tuesday, it turned out that the conscript might have committed suicide.

“It turned out that [the shot was] in the head. Based on initial data, it is believed to be a suicide,” said Commander of the Land Force Raimundas Vaikšnoras.

The soldier had spent almost two months in the military before his death.

The conscript’s relatives have been informed about the incident. The Lithuanian Military Police has launched a pre-trial investigation, while the Defence Staff of Armed Forces has started an internal inspection.

“The investigation is underway. Soldiers, friends, and members of the platoon are being questioned. […] The entire platoon was there, and they were collecting ammunition at the time of the incident. It is still difficult to explain how it happened,” Vaikšnoras said.

“We will try to find out whether these were personal or service-related reasons. [...] I don't want to speculate," he added.

The leadership of the Lithuanian military and President Gitanas Nausėda have expressed their condolences to the soldier's family, friends, and colleagues.

"The loss of every Lithuanian soldier is the loss to all of us," Nausėda said.
