Lithuania is emerging from the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, the government said on Tuesday, noting that over half of the adult population already has immunity to Covid-19.

The rate of new infections has gone down in 55 out of 60 Lithuanian municipalities over the last week, the government said in a statement.

The number of new cases is now almost three times lower than three weeks ago, while testing remains intense, at around 20,000 per day. If the trend continues, new cases should drop below 100 per day by the end of June, according to the government.

Over one million people in the country have already been vaccinated at least once. With those who have recovered from Covid-19, 42 percent of the population now has immunity, the statement says, or over half of people over the age of 16.

The most common variant in Lithuania is B.1.1.7. However, the B.1.620 mutation, which was first detected in early April in the town of Anykščiai, is also spreading steadily throughout the country.
