Lithuania introduces the first Smart Classroom in the Baltic States equipped with tablet PCs, and Ministry of Education plans to implement the use of tablets in Lithuanian schools on a wider scale.

Tablet PCs are used for the teaching process, for example tests. Pupils see several answer options in their tablets and have to choose a correct one, at a given time.

Meanwhile, teacher monitors how long it takes pupils to make the decision and how many correct answers there are.

The first Lithuanian Smart Classroom was launched in the Vilnius Jesuit School, and the cost of its installation amounted to about 10 thousand EUR. Company that provided equipment expects that smart or digital classrooms will become a common practice within the Lithuanian school network.

Ministry of Education promises providing tablet PCs for 150 schools, with the budget of around 3,5 million EUR for the implementation of the Project.

Tomas Dzimidavicius, Teacher, Vilnius Jesuit Gymnasium:

The Project of Interactive Solutions for the teaching staff means an opportunity of preparing for the lessons virtually and cutting through a lot of red-tape operations. The more that to most of today’s young people life is hardly imaginable without a computer. So if we have an opportunity of using the advanced technologies for the teaching process, we should make use of such an advantage.

Tomas Derzanauskas, 'Samsung' Business Unit Manager for Baltic States:

This is certainly an alternative. When students play with tablet computers, there’s an individual approach and the possibility to show what they can do during the classes.

Gintaras Steponavicius, Interim Minister of Education:

Tablet computers for more than 150 schools, for fifth grade pupils, is an innovation that we plan to launch in the current school year. I can say, that we shouldn't feel uncomfortable about the fact that we have only one such classroom, as yet. There many countries that can't even dream of such an opportunity. So I am really happy that Lithuania is one of those few.
