Statement by the President of Lithuania on the nomination for prime minister

During these general elections, the Social Democrats received most of the mandates in parliament and were the only who were able to form a majority coalition.

Therefore, I will nominate the leader of this party for prime minister tomorrow. From several possible coalition versions, the Social Democrats have opted for cooperation with the Labour Party which is sitting on the bench of the accused.

And they did not fulfill a publicly made promise, electing a person suspected of financial fraud to the Seimas leadership.

Time will show whether the Social Democrats are going to pursue a responsible and transparent policy.

Or whether they will equate themselves with the party on trial and become its shelter from the law-enforcement.

Only time will show whether the majority is concerned about the well-being of the Lithuanian people or about delaying judicial proceedings until the limitation period expires and about dividing money to benefit criminalized oligarch groups.

Today, we identify those who have won the election, but we have no winners as yet.

Therefore, I wish the Social Democratic leader to safeguard the honor of the party and the state without stumbling as the case was in the recent days, and to try to form a government that could accept responsibility for state governance.
