The Labour Party proposes Vydas Gedvilas to be the next speaker of parliament

The Labour Party is not wasting any time in placing its influence in the new parliament and is proposing a key figure for the position of parliamentary speaker. Vydas Gedvilas has just been proposed for this important position and a decision on it, is expected by next Tuesday, according to BNS.

Mr. Gedvilas is 53 years old and is the former head coach of Lithuania’s national women basketball team. He has been a member of the Labour Party since 2004 and was re-elected for the 3rd consecutive time in the mid-October elections. In 1981, he graduated from the Lithuanian State Institute of Physical Education and defended a doctoral degree in biomedicine in 1999.

Between 1988 and 2004, Gedvilas coached men and women basketball teams and he became the head coach of the women’s national basketball team between 1996 and 2002.
