Yesterday, the Lithuanian Embassy in Belarus was attacked when two Molotov cocktails were thrown at the country’s diplomatic mission.

According to the Lithuanian Ambassador in Minsk, Linas Linkevicius, the improvised incendiary weapons were thrown yesterday’s evening. In his own words to BNS, “two Molotov cocktails were cast into the territory yesterday evening. They caught fire, our police officers put them out. It was a coincidence that we avoided damage, the consequences could have been much worse,” commented Ambassador Linkevicius.

He also said that the lamentable incident occurred at approximately 10:45 pm (local Minsk time), at a time when he was inside the embassy building. The Molotov cocktails were thrown over the embassy’s fence. “We could not have had any presumptions about this happening. We will cooperate in the investigation,” concluded Linkevicius.

Belarus is the subject of international sanctions introduced by the European Union (EU) over Minsk’s brutal treatment of the political opposition and human rights advocates in the undemocratic and authoritarian regime of Belarusian President, Alexander Lukashenko.
