16 member of Mission Siberia '14 leaving Vilnius for the Russian region of Krasnoyarsk on Thursday to visit the places of burial of Lithuanian deportees.

Participants of the two-week mission will be seen off at Vilnius Railway Station and the seeing-off ceremony will be one of the main events of the World Lithuanian Unity Day.

Ignas Rusilas, one of the organizers of the expedition, told BNS the mission would visit not only the graves of Lithuanian deportees, but also the remaining Lithuanian communities.

"There are up to ten settlements we plan to visit. With no doubt, every day in Siberia is totally unique and you cannot know how long you will be able to travel that particular day," he said.

Around 20,000 Lithuanians lived in Krasnoyarsk in 1989 and now there remain only several thousands.

First massive deportations from Lithuania to this region started in 1941, and almost 21,000 people were deported to Siberia in 1948 alone.
