The jubilee 75th season of the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre (LNDT) in Vilnius promises to sum up the efforts of the past year. There are plans to show three large premieres and several smaller ones.

“The new season should, in a way, crown and conclude events that have been ongoing and maybe show certain results,” theatre art director Audronis Liuga said in a Tuesday press conference.

According to Liuga, the best celebration of the jubilee will occur if good, strong performances are created and interesting artists are connected.

Liuga announced the first premiere on November 27th will be the “Boris Godunov” by director Eimuntas Nekrošius.  The play is based on a piece by Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.

“This piece and decision is a collective position of the director and theatre. Well, Nekrošius had an idea for specific material, to make a play like this and I am very convinced today that this production is important. I think that Nekrošius’ idea will be unexpected and original. It will have nothing to do with historical interpretations of the play. Nekrošius usually does not modernise his productions, but this will be an original and unexpected idea related to the world we live in,” stated the LNDT art director.

January next year is expected to feature a premiere directed by Koršunovas. He plans to produce a play based on 20th century avant-garde authors, the Oberiu, creations.

The third large premiere is planned for 27 March next year. Polish director Krystian Lupa will produce a play based on the Austrian author Thomas Bernhard’s play Heroes’ Square. Various famous actors from theatres around Lithuania intend on performing in it.

The Lithuanian National Drama Theatre can trace its roots to  October 6, 1940 when Dutch playwright Herman Heijermans’ drama Hope was performed in the then Vilnius State Theatre on J. Basanavičius street.
