(BNS) Tensions rose between Lithuanian Ambassador to the UN Raimonda Murmokaitė and her Russian counterpart, Vitaliy Chiurkin, this week when he accused her of “blocking” a Russian statement proposal to condemn an attack on the Russian Embassy in Kiev that followed a pro-Russian attack that killed 49 soldiers in eastern Ukraine.

“The UN Security Council traditionally condemns all attacks on diplomatic missions of countries, and when Russian proposed the statement, no country objected… Lithuanian representatives, in their turn, suggested that the shooting of the airplane that claimed 49 lives should be condemned in addition to the statement on the attack on the embassy. Our proposal was supported by a few other countries,” said the ambassador.

“I think our proposal on the statement on the killing of soldiers and crew in the attack of the transport airplane cannot be considered a blocking – [the attack] is something the Security Council should consider as well, when we speak about the situation in Ukraine,” Murmokaite told BNS on Tuesday.

She noted that Russia was the country that refused to further polish the text.

“Russia referred to our proposal as to unacceptable conditions and refused to further refine the text. The reality is that there was no blocking…[Russia] refused to negotiate the text, the amendments we proposed, or simply the proposed idea,” she added.

On Monday, Russia’s Ambassador to the UN Vitaliy Chiurkin stated that Lithuania was the only country against the statement on the attack on the Russian Embassy in Ukraine.

On 14 June, pro-Russian militants shot down Ilyushin-76 aircraft carrying troops and military equipment as it approached an airport in the Eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk, killing 49 Ukrainian soldiers. Later that day, angry protestors besieged the Russian Embassy in Kiev, smashing windows and overturning cars. The Embassy staff had been evacuated and no injuries were reported in the incident.
