(BNS) International police forces are on Thursday taking preventive measures and stepping up traffic control on the Via Baltica highway, with officers from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland taking part.

The Via Baltica highway has one of the highest traffic accident rates in Lithuania, with 90 incidents recorded this year. 24 accidents involved casualties as 8 people were killed and 22 injured, according to Lithuania’s Police Department.

“The main focus will be put on checking drivers’ sobriety, control of dangerous and rowdy driving. Moreover, the technical state of vehicles will also be checked as well as whether truck drivers stick to the driving-rest regime and other traffic rules,” the Police Department said in a statement on Thursday.

The European route E 67 goes from Prague, Warsaw, Marijampolė, Kaunas, Panevėžys, Riga, Tallinn and Helsinki. It is known as the Via Baltica between Warsaw and Tallinn. In Lithuania, five roads of highway status are part of the Via Baltica.
