Last week Vilnius International Airport (VIA) received a delegation of executives from Riga International Airport, the press service of VIA reported.

Vilnius Airport invited Latvians to present VIA’s performance during the six-month Lithuanian presidency of the EU Council and to share the examples of the airport’s successful activities at the time of presidency-related events. Latvia will preside over the Council of the EU in the first half-year of 2015.

“The Lithuanian presidency of the EU Council was a serious task to Vilnius Airport. We are very happy and proud that our staff handled this challenge professionally, and all the processes during the presidency-related events went smoothly. It was the time when Vilnius Airport saw the greatest number of aircrafts landing at the airport on the same day; four and more delegations used to arrive at the same time,” the Managing Director of VIA Gediminas Almantas said.

“Today, we remember this period as an uninterrupted and intense workout that lasted over six months and which ended happily, and we pleasantly share the experience gained with our colleagues from Riga, who are standing head and shoulders above us,” Almantas continued.

The management of the traffic of VIP passengers, their ground transport and escorts, aviation security, top-quality service and the representation of Lithuania’s image right from the airstair of an aircraft – such were the major challenges and tasks of VIA during the events related to the Lithuanian presidency of the Council of the EU.

VIA employees, who were especially successful in solving such tasks, did not only present the statistics of their activities to the team from Riga Airport, but also showed the VIP Lounge fitted up for the EU presidency exclusively, as well as the newly constructed VIA fire rescue station and the activities of the Business Lounge.

Over the Lithuanian presidency of the EU Council the VIA’s VIP Lounge handled 1,497 delegations forming the traffic of over 5,000 passengers, whereas at the time of the main presidency event – Eastern Partnership Summit in November last year – 80 aircrafts landed at Vilnius Airport, bearing in mind that VIA usually handles about 40 aircrafts on a daily basis.
