The President will congratulate honoured Lithuanian expats

On January 3, the brightest Lithuanians and other highly accomplished individuals will be honoured at the Global Lithuanian Awards 2013 in the Presidential Palace for their achievements in science, business and culture and for their work, contributing towards the strengthening of the country’s position in the world, the Global Lithuanian Leaders wrote in a press release.

The awards, for which a total of 41 candidates from 13 countries were nominated, will be given in the following categories: promotion of Lithuanian export, attraction of investments, implemented innovations, youth leadership encouragement, “Brain Exchange,” “Friend of Lithuania,” and the promotion of Lithuania through professional activities and lifetime achievements.

The ceremony to be held in Vilnius will be attended by Angelė Kavakienė (USA), CEO of Food Depot International Inc., John Ohman (Lithuania), Swedish director of documentaries on the post-war history of Lithuania, and other professionals from China, the United States and the UK. The awards ceremony will be broadcast live on LRT Lituanica, LRT Klasika, and the news portals Lrt.lt and DELFI. The winners will be congratulated by the President of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaitė.

 Accordionist Martynas Levickis will appear at the event. The young musician, currently living in the United Kingdom, is also nominated in the World Lithuanian 2013 category.

“We are pleased to see so many examples of Lithuanian expats and their children cherishing their roots and contributing towards the strengthening of Lithuania‘s position and global awareness. We encourage links between the expatriate professionals’ community and representatives of business, science and other fields in Lithuania. The event aims to recognize and reward the Lithuanian diaspora achievements, to strengthen their relationships and foster new international initiatives,” says Kotryna Stankutė-Jaščemskienė, the director Global Lithuanian Leaders (GLL), the event organizer.

Special guest of honour at the Global Lithuanian Awards, Kingsley Aikins, CEO of Diaspora Matters is well-known and respected internationally in the diaspora field. He has worked with Ireland and many other countries on integration of the diaspora potential in order to stimulate the country’s growth.

 His work is based on the belief that by leveraging and networking the diaspora communities, the brain drain can become brain gain and brain exchange. According to the expert, expats will be  critically important sources of talent and will constitute competitive advantages for countries that know and keep in touch with their diasporas.

 The Global Lithuanian Awards are initiated by the network of the Lithuanian professional diaspora Global Lithuanian Leaders together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, the non-profit organization Enterprise Lithuania and the telecommunications company TEO LT. The aim of the GLL network is to involve professionals who live abroad in a variety of projects and to make use of their experience, connections and knowledge in order to strengthen the international reach of the Lithuanian name.

 About the Global Lithuanian Leaders:

 GLL, the organization initiating the awards, acts as a global network of professionals who identify themselves with Lithuania in order to encourage cooperation and create global opportunities for the country. The purpose of the network is to join efforts to build a strong and competitive Lithuania, to strengthen its global positions in the areas of economics, business, culture, and science. GLL projects include the Business Advisors program implemented in partnership with the non-profit organization Enterprise Lithuania; the LT Big Brother project carried out in partnership with the Lithuanian City of London Club and the Lithuanian Wall Street Club, and the World Lithuanian Economic Forum organized in partnership with the Lithuanian Business Confederation. These projects are aimed at involving the diaspora of professionals and making use of their experience, knowledge and contacts in order to strengthen Lithuania’s global reach.
