The battle was part of a long series of Muscovite-Lithuanian Wars conducted by Russian rulers striving to gather all the lands of former Kievan Rus’ under their rule.

Lithuania has also named 2014 the Year of Kristijonas Donelaitis, the father of the Lithuanian literature, the Year of Theatre, the Year of the Lithuanian Song Festival and the Year of Children’s Health.
