On 25 November 2013 Lithuania’s Minister of National Defence and his Baltic and Polish counterparts discussed issues of regional co-operation at a meeting in Warsaw, Poland, the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania has informed.

“We are developing stronger co-operation with Poland, as we enhance regional co-operation and sustain strong relations among the three Baltic States and our Nordic neighbours. The multinational NATO’s exercise Steadfast Jazz 2013 that has taken place this autumn is a perfect example of the close co-operation we can boast of. We aim at having such exercises held regularly and to a similar extent,” Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas said at the meeting.

The Ministers agreed upon the implementation of the Connected Forces Initiative (CFI) based on ambitious exercise schedules and an aspiration to have large-scale exercises held at least once per year. CFI is aimed at helping Alliance nations to remain interoperable as the operation in Afghanistan winds down.

The Ministers also discussed NATO’s role in responding to the emerging energy and cyber security challenges and discussed possibilities for NATO enlargement.

At the meeting the Ministers also shared their views on the preparations for the upcoming European Council on Defence to take place this December.

They looked into the issues of defence spending, the importance of addressing points of the Eastern Partnership (EaP) at the European Heads of State or Government level, and underlined the need for closer EU-NATO cooperation.
