Lithuania to take over the UN Security Council Presidency in January 2014

Not only was Lithuania elected to the United Nations Security Council for the first time, Lithuania is also going to take over the UN Security Council Presidency on January 1, right after it completes its EU Presidency, the Press Service of the President has informed. 

Not only was Lithuania elected to the United Nations Security Council for the first time, Lithuania is also going to take over the UN Security Council Presidency on January 1, right after it completes its EU Presidency, the Press Service of the President has informed.

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė commented on the historical recognition: “As member of the UN Security Council, Lithuania will take part in the decision making on key global security problems. After Lithuania’s EU Presidency, it is a new and honourable challenge as well as commitment to the entire international community.”

Having received 187 supporting votes, Lithuania will now serve as one of ten non-permanent members on the Council beginning on 1 January 2014.

There are 15 members on the UN Security Council. The United Nations has 193 member states.
