These days, Lithuania is hosting the International Wood Carvers Symposium.

Artists from the five neighbour countries participate in the Event. Their wooden sculptures are dedicated to the 90th birth anniversary of the famous Lithuanian poet Anzelmas Matutis.

Anzelmas Matutis was a children poet. Therefore carvers are creating sculptures for children - wood owls, hares and similar characters from Matutis poems.

Symposium ends on Friday. A park of wood sculptures will be opened near the Matutis Memorial Museum in Alytus.

Video material that was submitted to European Broadcasting Union:

Soundbite (Russian)

Jevgenij Pticin, carver from Russia:

Matutis poems are very close to us, and we are happy to leave a sculpture here, in Lithuania.

Dita Kalmane, carver from Latvia:

We are carving a woodpecker’s forge. We are now in the middle of the process. Our idea is that children would not only look at the sculpture, but could touch it as well.

Soundbite (Lithuanian)

Artūras Zienka, carver from Lithuania:

A topic always influences a work of an artist. It is always interesting when your task is related to children. It’s very difficult to make a sculpture in a way that it could be understood not only by adults, but by children too.
