On 4-11 August, 2013, the Lithuanian-American Community Education Council held a Lithuanian teacher development course entitled ‘Leave Traces’ in Manchester, Michigan.

The course, led and coordinated by the Lithuanian-American Community Education Council Chair Daiva Navickienė, was attended by over 50 principals and teachers from various US and Canadian Lithuanian schools.

Valdemaras Sarapinas, Consul General of the Republic of Lithuania, visited the event and thanked teachers for their enthusiasm, commitment and dedication. Sarapinas noted that Lithuanian schools are integral for the formation of Lithuanian world views and common human values for those living outside of Lithuania.

Sarapinas went on to say that these schools “help our children develop respect towards their own community, nation and the entire homeland of Lithuania. Please, continue this noble work in the future. Develop our next generations, cultivate the Lithuanian language, traditions and values, and celebrate Lithuanian holidays.”

Since the beginning of this year, support to Lithuanian education abroad has switched from the purvey of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Ministry of Education and Science. The Ministry of Education will now be responsive for organising Lithuanian schools teacher training seminars and for provision of schools with a variety of teaching aids and cultural material.

Sarapinas stressed that this in no way implies that the Lithuanian Embassy in Washington and Ottawa and the Consulates General in Chicago and New York are turning away from the Lithuanian schools concerns and problems as he promised to maintain close cooperation in the future.

Course participants were also welcomed by Algis Zaparackas, the Lithuanian Honorary Consul in Michigan, Sigita Šimkuvienė-Rosen, the Lithuanian American Community National Chairman of the Board, and Joana Kuraitė-Lasienė, Chairman of the Lithuanian Canadian Community.

Topics of discussion during the meeting included participation in the ‘Global Lithuanian programme’, information dissemination about the Lithuanian schools activities and ways to improve communication with Lithuanian state institutions.

The event was perhaps best described by Aleksandros Kazickienės Lithuanian School Principal Neila Baumilienė, when she said “from the Lithuanian authorities we ask not for money, but intellectual cooperation and assistance”.
