At the invitation of President Dalia Grybauskaitė, the President of Finland, Sauli Väinämö Niinistö, will make a state visit to Lithuania on 14-15 May, the Press Service of the President has informed.

During their meeting, the Presidents will discuss bilateral relations and regional cooperation, energy issues, and Lithuania’s upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union.

According to President Dalia Grybauskaitė, Finland is an important partner of Lithuania. The two countries have common interests in the Baltic Sea region and in the whole of Europe. They maintain successful business relations.

Finland is among Lithuania’s ten largest investors. It is also the country with which we carry out most of our joint investment projects.

Lithuanian-Finnish partnership is strong in the international arena as well. The nations cooperate within the NB6 format which connects the Nordic and Baltic countries in the EU, and within the NB8 format which connects all Nordic and Baltic countries.

From July, when Lithuania starts its presidency of the EU Council and Finland its presidency of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS), both countries will have an excellent opportunity to further enhance their cooperation.

On the second day of the visit, the two Presidents will open a new combined heat and power plant constructed by Fortum Heat in Klaipėda. This will be the fourth largest heat generation plant in the world and the leading energy company in Northern Europe, Russia and the Baltic region. After official events, the heads of state will pay a visit to Nida.

President Sauli Niinistö will be accompanied by a delegation of Finnish business people who will take part in a bilateral business forum to discuss investment opportunities and enhanced economic cooperation.
