Brazil commenced its duties as the host nation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup with the release of the tournament draw last Friday night.

The host nation has been drawn to play Croatia for the opening match on the 12th of June in a group which also features Mexico and Cameroon.

Though Lithuania failed to qualify for the tournament both Greece and Bosnia & Herzegovina; powerhouse sides in the Baltic nation’s qualifying tournament, have been placed in fairly achievable groups.

Bosnia & Herzegovina, who qualified for its inaugural tournament having finished on top of the UEFA Group G table, has been placed in Group F against top four favourites Argentina as well as Iran and Nigeria.

The road to Brazil was well built for the Bosnian team from day one, travelling to Liechtenstein to record an astonishing 8:1 victory.

Bosnia & Herzegovina’s duels against Lithuania would both be victories firstly at home (a 3:0 win in Zenica) and then before 6,239 people in Kaunas’ Darius and Girėnas Stadium last October (only a 1:0 triumph on this occasion).

Greece advanced to the second round play-offs and after recording back to back victories over Romania last month, was granted entry to its third FIFA World Cup in history.

During the last two years Greece has also recorded two victories against Lithuania (a 2:0 triumph in Piraeus and a comfortable 1:0 win before 4,500 in Vilnius’ LFF Stadium). The Mediterranean nation will now playoff against fellow dark horses Colombia, Japan and the Ivory Coast in Group C.

Other draw highlights include 2010 World Cup finalists Spain and the Netherlands meeting in Group B alongside Australia and Chile while 2018 tournament hosts Russia will face South Korea, Algeria and Belgium in Group H.
