Discussions on Lithuania's new culture policy started on Monday in the president's office. Representatives of art institutions, communities, and experts were invited by President Gitanas Nausėda to discuss the new Law on Culture Policy Framework drafted by the Culture Ministry.

The law is meant to revamp the country's cultural policy, including state and municipal funding for the arts.

The forum on Monday is to provide feedback from the public before the law is presented to the government and the parliament, Seimas.

“The goal is to exchange opinions about the law, discuss which provisions in the law could be improved,” the president's adviser Antanas Bubnelis told BNS. “The president's office acts as a moderator.”

Another forum is planned for late August and will be dedicated to historical memory policies.

Authors of the Law on Culture Policy Framework says the goal is to make cultural institutions more accessible and to develop a financing model linked to their performance.

Another important priority is to increase public funding for culture and arts which would include state and municipal sources.
