Police officers admit that the kinds of offences that used to send shivers down everyone's spine in the early ears of Lithuania's independence – explosions, bloody public standoffs, show executions of gang members – have virtually ceased in recent years. However, they quickly add, the fact that manifestations of organized crime are far less conspicuous than they were two decades ago does not mean that criminal syndicates have been wiped out. It is only that their mode of operation has changed and gangsters are now more intelligent, cautious and some have moved their “businesses” abroad.
