Nine Lithuanian parliamentarians have registered a bill to allow same-sex partnership, but the initiative is unlikely to get any major support.

The draft bill was prepared by members of the ruling Social Democratic and oppositional Liberal Movement parliamentarians.

One of the authors of the bill Dalia Kuodyte said the law is not aimed at undermining the importance of marriage, but at giving free choice of the method to legalize a relationship, under which live many same sex couples.

Under the bill, same-sex partnership would be registered at a notary's office between two adults who would also have to conclude a contract, stipulating how they would divide the property they purchase together, in case their relationship ends.

However, the initiative is unlikely to be supported by other parliamentarians. A poll carried out last November showed that only 15 percent of the Lithuanian population support the registration of the same-sex partnership, while 79 percent were against.

Lithuanian Gay league welcomes the proposal as it breaks taboo on discussions about the rights of homosexual persons living together.
