Italy's Typhoon fighter-jets serving in the NATO air policing mission of the Baltic states were scrambled from Šiauliai air base in late hours of Tuesday to escort 11 Russian war planes flying above the Baltic Sea from mainland Russia to its Kaliningrad region.

"In late evening, at nearly 11:30 p.m., NATO fighter-jets were scrambled to identify aircrafts. They identified two An-26 transport airplanes, one An-12 transport airplane and an additional group of eight aircrafts including Su – 27 and Su – 34 fighter-jets," the Defence Ministry's Public Relations Division told BNS on Wednesday.

The division's specialists said the Russian airplanes had their transponders switched off, had not provided flight plans and refused to establish contact.

On Tuesday, Russia announced testing of its combat readiness in some of its regions, including Kaliningrad, and lifted fighter-jets, bombers and Iskander missile systems to the enclave.
