Foreign investors interested in Lithuanian national airline, PM says

Foreign investors are interested in contributing to the creation of a national air carrier in Lithuania, Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius said on Thursday, noting that the issue of a national airline would be dealt with after the mayoral election in Vilnius.

Foreign investors are interested in contributing to the creation of a national air carrier in Lithuania, Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius said on Thursday, noting that the issue of a national airline would be dealt with after the mayoral election in Vilnius.

"We are now waiting for the election in the city of Vilnius to end. We have several plans for how to have a clear airline and I think that the government is ready to contribute to the creation of that program if a serious investor comes in," he told the Žinių Radijas radio.

The prime minister said that foreign investors would be willing to contribute to the creation of a national airline as well.

"If a national carrier were a purely Lithuanian-owned company, then it would hardly have clear prospects for the future. We are now working with some companies and they are interested in investing and starting to work here," he said.

FlyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines grounded flights in early 2009 due to financial problems and was later declared bankrupt.

Air Lituanica, an airline controlled by the city of Vilnius, launched flights in the summer of 2013.
