Lithuanian government hosts an official event at the Palace of the Grand Dukes to mark the Euro adoption with the President of the EU Council Donald Tusk, as a special guest.

Lithuania adopted Euro on 1st January 2015. Today is the last day that national currency Litas simultaneously circulates in the market, leaving Euro the only currency in the country.

On the invitation of the Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, a formal event is joined by President of the European Council Donald Tusk and Vice-President of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis.

There is a tradition that the new Eurozone country organizes an event to discuss the changeover process, as well as the future challenges.

Before participating at the event, Donald Tusk has met Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė who stressed that EU shall continue with practical support for Ukrainian reforms and organize donors' conference for Ukraine in the near future.

ALGIRDAS BUTKEVIČIUS, Prime Minister of Lithuania:
I am happy that transition to Euro is smooth and prompt – the majority of population have Euros in their pockets. Today is the last day that people can use both currencies (Litas and Euro).

Soundbite (English)

DONALD TUSK, President of EU Council:
The coins however will be very familiar with the Vytis (a rider on a horse from Middle Ages, a national symbol of Lithuania) on one side. Keeping up a tradition dating from the 14th century is also very close to my heart as you know (Poland and Lithuania had the same monarch at those times).

Soundbite (English)

DONALD TUSK, President of EU Council:
You feel the consequences of Russia's policy and actions more than most others. As I have said repeatedly, European policy towards the East is not a policy against Russia. It is a policy in support of our Eastern neighbours to help them become more modern and prosperous democratic societies.

Soundbite (Lithuanian)

DALIA GRYBAUSKAITĖ, President of Lithuania:
When it comes to energetic union of Europe, it is one of the ideas born when Mr. Tusk was the Prime Minister of Poland, and we support this idea.

Soundbite (English)

DONALD TUSK, President of EU Council:
We will not find a long term solution for Ukraine without a firm, consistent and united European strategy towards Russia.
