Lithuania's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius on Tuesday told his Italian counterpart about his regret over Italy's permission to allow detained Russian citizen Vasily Kotlerov, who is wanted by Lithuania in the 1991 coup case, to leave the country and escape extradition to Lithuania.

"I spoke to the Italian foreign minister about the decision and told him about my regret over this, as there was a lawful and reasonable request on our side for extradition of the suspected citizen," Linkevičius told BNS in Brussels on Tuesday.
The Lithuanian diplomacy chief raised the issue in Brussels where the two foreign ministers are attending a NATO meeting.
Linkevičius described the situation as unfortunate, noting that the suspect managed to escape from Italy.
Kotlerov, a former Soviet officer from St. Petersburg, was detained at a Milan airport on 13 May under a European arrest warrant after arriving for a celebration of his 50th anniversary. After being imposed a lighter supervision measure, house arrest, he went missing.
