A ship carrying heavy military equipment of US troops docks at the Lithuania seaport of Klaipeda. The equipment will be used for a joint exercise with Lithuanian soldiers.

The equipment includes Stryker heavy armoured transporters, Bradley infantry fighting machines and other military vehicles.

The U.S. military says it is the first time it has had to ship armoured reinforcements to Europe since the end of the Cold War, at the start of the 1990s.

They will replace a similar number of much lighter equipped U.S. paratroopers deployed on a rotational basis at short notice after Russia's seizure of Ukraine's Crimea region in March.

The new shift is planned to consist of about 160 US troops from the 1st Squadron of 1st Cavalry Regiment. Just like earlier US shifts, the new rotation is to be based in Rukla.
