Lithuania's second-largest city Kaunas will seek to become the European and Lithuanian capital of culture, under two draft decisions registered at the municipality.

The European Commission has approved a list of countries eligible for the status of the European Capital of Culture – Lithuania and Luxemburg were listed for 2022.

In 2009, Lithuania's capital Vilnius was the European Capital of Culture.

One of the draft decisions suggests that Kaunas should apply to become the Lithuanian Capital of Culture in 2018, the year when Lithuania marks 100 years since the restoration of statehood.
