Lithuanian Poles will stage a protest outside the German Embassy in Vilnius on Wednesday against discrimination against minorities. Vilnius Division of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania, part of the ruling coalition, organized the protest.
The organizers say the move is aimed at expressing dissatisfaction over a lack of progress in resolving problems faced by Lithuanian Poles and other ethnic minorities.
“The picket is being organized outside the German Embassy in Vilnius because [Germany] is considered one of the most economically-powerful countries in the world, having the largest population in Europe and being one of the major players on the European Union political stage. More importantly, the German ethnic minority outside the country enjoys all rights guaranteed by its minority status,” the EAPL Vilnius Division said in a statement.
EAPL Vilnius added that the Polish minority in Lithuania “cannot tolerate the ongoing restrictions of its rights and financial repressions.”
Vilnius City Municipality gave the EAPL permission to hold a protest of up to 500 people.
Lithuanian Poles demand the legalization of bilingual street signs in areas populated by ethnic minorities as well as the spelling of personal names using non-Lithuanian characters.
