Grybauskaitė: agreement on new EC President expected in June

(BNS) Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaitė hopes that European Union (EU) member-states and institutions will agree on a new candidate to head the European Commission over a month.

In her words, the commissioner to be delegated by Lithuania should also be announced in June.

“We think we will be able to name a specific candidate (for EC president) at the Council in the end of June after an agreement is reached with political forces of the European Parliament,” Grybauskaitė told BNS on Wednesday after the EU summit in Brussels.

In her words, if the consultations are successful, the European Parliament may be able to vote on the new line-up of the EC in July.

“In June, Lithuania will certainly make a decision,” said the president when asked about the date of announcing the Lithuanian candidate for the EC.

In the president’s words, the EU summit in Brussels agreed that the EC will be asked to focus on ensuring economic growth, creation of new jobs, competition and development of the single energy policy.

In comment of the EP election results, Grybauskaitė noted that the new parliament will include “about 70 percent of the forces that are very pro-European” regardless of the stronger Euro-sceptic parties.

The president said the summit did not include any serious discussions about specific personalities to head the European Commission.

Conservative parties who won the most EP mandates have proposed Luxembourg’s former PM Jean Claude Juncker for EC president.
