(BNS) EU Tax Commissioner Algirdas Šemeta said on Monday that he saw no serious obstacles to Lithuania’s eurozone membership.

Šemeta underlined that the European Commission on June 4 would make its final decision on whether to allow Lithuania to adopt the single currency.

“I do believe that Lithuania will introduce the euro in early 2015. I do not see any serious reasons why this should not happen,” the Lithuanian commissioner said on LRT Radio.

“On the other hand, the Commission’s official position will be announced on Jun. 4 after the convergence report has been approved. This position will depend on how Lithuania complies with the Maastricht criteria,” he said.

Šemeta is to meet with Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius in Vilnius on Monday to discuss support to Ukraine, euro adoption and the fight against tax evasion.

Lithuania expects to join the eurozone next January.
