Ignas Jonynas’ film  ”the Gambler,” that competed in the “Prix Sauvage”  (main program) of the international film festival in Paris “L’Europe Autour de l’Europe”, was awarded the special jury prize and the “Prix Luna” for the best movie of the Festival selection – LRT.lt wrote referring to the press release of the authors.

The ninth annual Festival mainly focuses on films of European authors and presents the premieres of French films.  Different juries give awards in two categories.  This year’s “Prix Sauvage” chairman of the jury, Polish producer Krzysztof Zanussi, awarded “The Gambler” the special jury prize and Pierre Arlaud, the director of documentary films, leading the “Prix Luna” jury of young professionals, awarded it the best film of the Festival selection.  The Festival attracts exceptional film authors – this year’s lectures in excellence were presented by Ukrainian film director Kira Muratova.

“During my years of study, I had the opportunity to study with K. Zanussi.  He is still one of my greatest authorities, someone who opens new cinematic perspectives with his work.  So the award for “The Gambler” from his hands is especially appreciated. And the fact that the film was awarded not only by professionals, but by the future authors as well as earning the  ”Luna” award, shows that “The Gambler” can start a conversation with different generations” – says Lithuanian director I. Jonynas.

“The Gambler” competed with 9 films from Spain, Austria, Estonia, Lithuania, France, Greece, Sweden, and Norway.  The “Prix Sauvage” award for the best film of the Festival selection went to Sweden director Jan Troell for “The Last Sentence”.

Leading roles in I. Jonynas film were played by actor Vytautas Kaniušonis and Ona Mekas, the daughter of Lithuanian artist Jonas Mekas, living in Los Angeles.  The director wrote the script together with the philosopher and writer Kristupas Sabolius. Director of photography – Janis Eglitis, production designer – Nerijus Narmontas, editor – Stasys Žak, original music by Paulius Kilbauskas and Domas Strupinskas (“The Bus”).

“The Gambler” was the first film from the Baltic States, whose world premier took place at the San Sebastian Film Festival. In the Warsaw Film Festival, the film won the Special Jury Prize. The film of I. Jonynas has also participated in Festivals taking place in Germany, Luxembourg, Estonia, India, Morocco, Georgia, Italy, US, Ireland, and Mexico.

The film tells the story about the doctor Vincentas at the emergency services station, who has a passion (an addiction?) for gambling. An idea strikes Vincentas to create an illegal game related to his profession. The story, with an exquisite plot and elements from thrillers and melodramas, approaches the issues of ethical choices, revealing a unique intersection between the world views of post-Soviet conformists and the successful capitalist.

The premier of “The Gambler” in all Lithuanian cinemas will take place on September 26th.
