Lithuanian parties draw numbers for EP elections

(BNS) Representatives of the political parties and the coalition running for the European Parliament (EP) on Wednesday drew numbers for the elections.

The first party on the EP electoral ballot will be the Liberal Movement, followed by the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats (conservatives) and the Valdemar Tomaševski Bloc, a coalition of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania and the Russian Alliance. The Labour Party will be number four, the Order and Justice party will be fifth, the Lithuanian Green Party will be sixth, while the Nationalist Union, the Liberal and Centre Union, the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Party and the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party will continue the list.

The draw was organized by the Central Electoral Commission, with envelopes with numbers shuffled by Parliamentary Speaker Lorėta Graužinienė of the Labour Party.

The elections will this year involve nine parties and a coalition, a total of 215 candidates. The 2009 EP elections featured 15 political parties.

The elections are scheduled to take place on May 25. Lithuania will elect 11 MEPs.
