(BNS) Lithuania’s State Security Department mostly focused its attention and resources on anti-Lithuanian activities of Russian and Belarusian intelligence and security services last year, according to the agency’s 2013 activity report.

“During counterintelligence investigations, activities of intelligence services from hostile foreign countries were identified and neutralized, including attempts to recruit citizens of the Republic of Lithuania or in any other way gain information important for national security and, therefore, not publicly accessible or sometimes even classified,” the report says.

According to the SSD, staff of Russia’s intelligence services are very actively engaged in anti-Lithuanian activities under the cover of the Russian Embassy, Russia’s Trade Representation and the General Consulate of Russia in Lithuania’s western port of Klaipeda. Using the diplomatic status and guarantees, staff of Russia’s intelligence and security services are collecting information of interest for them about Lithuania and its partners.

The report also states that important investigations were carried out in 2013 to identify threats related to the stability of countries in the region and their impact on Lithuania, Lithuania’s aspiration to have vital energy resources and implement energy projects, foreign countries’ influence on Lithuania’s ethnic communities, left-wing and right-wing extremism, terrorism and foreign countries’ influence on Lithuania’s information sector.

On Wednesday, the SSD will present its report to the Seimas Committee on National Security and Defense.
