(BNS) The European Union must expand sanctions against Russia amid its ongoing aggression in Ukraine, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevčus said on Monday.
“I believe we shouldn’t focus too much on washing dishes when the house is on fire. We should take the reality and the reality is that we see facts of external aggression,” Linkevičius told journalists ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
In his words, the EU must decide on the expansion of the so-called second package of sanctions against Russia, including asset freezing and visa bans for responsible persons. According to Linkevičius, the EU must also get ready for economic measures, “especially with regard to the financial sector, banking sector, arms sales.”
EU foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels on Monday to discuss the situation in Ukraine amid ongoing building seizures by pro-Russian fighters in the east of the country and calls for referenda on giving the local authorities more powers or on the possibility to join Russia.
The West claim the unrest is being incited by people sent by Russia.
