According to the Seimas opposition leader Andrius Kubilius, Poland should pay attention to the State Security Department statement that “in order to fulfill their interests in the Baltics, Russia aims to use Vilnius area issues to their advantage”, DELFI reported.
During a press conference in the Seimas, the politician mentioned threats pointed out by the State Security Department report, and drew attention to statements that “some Vilnius area leaders’ actions and policies represent Russian foreign policy aims,” and that the “Russian embassy in Vilnius provides exceptional support towards political parties that were formed exclusively on ethnic background as well as through disclosure of some ‘current’ issues”.
“Even though the State Security Department does not publicly announce which Polish community activists are believed to behave in such a way; however, it is obvious that some statements, which Valdemar Tomashevski has recently personally confirmed, by talking about the new Ukrainian government, by expressing Moscow’s attitude, rather than the attitudes of Warsaw or Vilnius. According to him, the Ukrainian government is supposedly composed of dangerous nationalists and fascists” said A. Kubilius.
The leader of the opposition expressed his astonishment that Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius has yet to react towards such State Security Department statements.
“The State Security Department claims that one of the coalition partners is carrying out politics, which directly corresponds to Russian foreign politics; however, Social Democrats do not present a response regarding this issue. Their silence resembles silent cooperation” – spoke A. Kubilius.
According to the opposition leader, these statements should be “considered by official Warsaw and their Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is responsible for the fact that during the past few years relations between Warsaw and Vilnius became V. Tomashevski hostages”.
“After these public statements of State Security Department, one must conclude that due to Warsaw’s efforts, V. Tomashevski has gained exclusive rights in ‘our international relations’, in order to turn Warsaw and Vilnius relations into hostages of Moscow. In the presence of current dangers there are certain things, regarding Polish and Lithuanian public relations, that need to be addressed by both Vilnius and Warsaw” said A. Kubilius.
