Lithuania could import gas from US in late 2015 or early 2016, said Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, the Baltic Course reported, quoting ELTA.

Lithuania could import gas from US in late 2015 or early 2016, said Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, the Baltic Course reported, quoting ELTA.

According to the prime minister, Lithuania’s own liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal will be completed by the end of 2014 and will protect the country from a “gas war.” Lithuanian will be even able to supply gas to neighbouring countries.

“As for purchasing gas from the U.S., it should not be expected to happen this year or the next, since they have not built a terminal for export, but they are working very hard on it. And this [gas import] could begin at the end of 2015 or at the beginning of 2016,” said Butkevičius in an interview with radio Žinių Radijas on Thursday.

Butkevičius said that until Lithuania begins importing gas from the U.S., it will focus on buying from other countries. The states of the Middle East, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan are among the potential gas suppliers.
