Vilnius IFF “Kino Pavasaris” joins Cannes, Berlin, Venice and other festivals in show of solidarity with Ukrainian colleagues 2014.03.20 11:37

More than 60 festivals responded to a call to show solidarity with their Ukrainian colleagues by providing their films for free to movie festivals in troubled Ukraine.

More than 60 festivals responded to a call to show solidarity with their Ukrainian colleagues by providing their films for free to movie festivals in troubled Ukraine.

The initiative’s coordinators from Warsaw IFF, Helsinki IFF ̈Love & Anarchy, Tallinn Black Nights IFF, Transilvania IFF, Febiofest in Prague and Sofia IFF disseminated a letter calling on directors, producers and sales agents to give their films “willingly and for free to all film festivals in Ukraine” and not charge any screening fees from Ukrainian festivals this year. They asked national film institutes to help subsidise for filmmakers attending festivals in Ukraine, as well as shipping fees to get film prints to the events.

The response was overwhelming. Within a couple of days, most of the important international festivals were backing the initiative. Among the first to sign on were Kirill Razlogov and Andrei Plakhov from Moscow IFF, along with Alexei Medvedev from Message to Man IFF in Saint Petersburg. The initiative came just days after the leading Russian film-makers’ association Kinosoyuz published an open letter expressing support for their Ukrainian counterparts. The letter had been signed by directors Boris Khlebnikov, Alexey Popogrebsky, Andrey Proshkin, as well as documentary filmmakers Maria Razbezhkina and Vitaly Mansky, among others.

In addition, director Alexander Sokurov, internationally known for such films as Russian Ark and Faust, also spoke out publicly last weekend about the events in Ukraine and Crimea: “Yes, we are close, we have a lot in common, but that doesn’t mean that we are one nation. We are different and we need to respect and value this difference.”

Those willing to support Ukrainian film festivals are kindly asked to share the message which can be found here.
