Inhabitants of Rusnė, a Lithuanian town on the Russian border, have expressed concern at the appearance of what they believe to be suspicious Russian cargo trailers along the Skirvytė River as DELFI reported.

Three caravans appeared on the opposite bank of the Skirvytė River, which is in Kaliningrad territory. Rusnė locals have expressed concern about a potential Russian incursion on the Lithuanian border. Klaipėda writes about the growing concerns.

Though the cargo trailers appeared before Russia announced that it was undertaking military training exercises, inhabitants have been keeping a close eye on the vehicles, which they say are never left unattended.

If it were later in the year, it would be normal for smelt fishermen to settle in on the Russian bank of the river for the fishing season. However, locals say that this camp is too early; fishing will not be possible in the river before the winter ice melts in about two weeks.

Nemunas Delta Regional Park ecologist Robertas Kubilius thinks the issue may come down to a simple difference in timetables. “People [in Russia] work like they are part of a collective farm. We [Lithuanians] keep close track of the biological tables and don’t waste time,” Kubilius said. “It seems that soon the smelt will appear.”

The officers of Pagėgiai Frontier District also said that vigilance has been reinforced in the area, primarily because of the upcoming smelt season, which draws fishermen from both countries.

Border guards have recorded only one notable change – an increase in the flow of people traveling from Kaliningrad to Lithuania. Russians are coming to Lithuania to shop as the economic situation in Russia deteriorates, with a slumping ruble and rising food prices.

Parliament member Arvydas Anušauskas and political scientist Lauras Bielisnis both said they were not surprised at concerns in Lithuania, particularly when viewed in the context of the situation in Ukraine. However, they say they doubt there is any real threat.
