Lithuania’s Defence Ministry has reviewed its state allocations for 2014 investment projects and plans to earmark nearly 29.8 million litas (EUR 8.6 million) for down payment for two helicopters.

Lithuania’s Defence Ministry has reviewed its state allocations for 2014 investment projects and plans to earmark nearly 29.8 million litas (EUR 8.6 million) for down payment for two helicopters.

The 2014 budget did not envisage additional money for the helicopters; therefore, the down payment money was generated from the slashed funding for purchase of, for example, vehicles and special equipment for Land Forces and Logistics Forces, as well as operation, control and communication systems, simulation systems for defence personnel, etc.

The Defence Ministry said that reduced funding of the approved investment projects will cause a pause in upgrading and modernisation of existing capacities of the defence system, with the development postponed to a later date.

In October of 2013, the Defence Ministry signed an agreement with Eurocopter, a company operated by the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Agency (EADS), on purchase of three helicopters AS 365 Dauphin for 180 million litas.

Money for one of the helicopters will be earmarked from the European Union’s (EU) 2007-2013 financial perspective.
