The European People’s Party (EPP) deputy chairman and European Parliament’s (EP) EPP group chairman from Poland, Jacek Saryusz-Wolski urged a political boycott for the Sochi winter Olympic Games, www.myep.delfi.lt  reported.

According to www.euractiv.com, in Saryusz-Wolski’s opinion, with Russia breaching a mass of international relations rules and principles, high ranking political figures should not honour the Russian state by attending the Sochi Olympic Games.

The US president Barack Obama, as well as US Vice President Joe Biden are not planning to go to the Sochi winter Olympic Games. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, French president Francois Hollande, German president Joachim Gauck and other leaders from the Western world are taking the same position.

Such a decision is said to be a symbolical boycott of the Olympic Games due to the Russian position toward the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) community.

For now, only Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaitė, who has been openly criticising the Russian government, has declared in public that she intends to boycott the Sochi Olympics for political reasons. The deputy chairman of the European Commission, Viviane Reding has announced that she has no intention to go to Sochi until minority representatives will be treated according to current Russian law.
